About Jonathan Greenberg
From music lessons in NYC with Jimmy & Maxine Knepper plus lead Symphony players to recording sessions since age 12, Jonathan has been on the music scene. He has played with Frank Foster, Kenny Washington, Delbert Felix, Top Schnear, Tommy Newsome, Jackie Byard, Joe Kennedy Jr., Harris Simon, Steve Wilson, Billy Drummond plus Royce Campbell and Joel Futterman.
Jon Greenberg was born and raised in New York City, played trumpet in pit orchestras for Guys & Dolls, South Pacific & Fiddler on the Roof, gave four concerts at Carnegie Hall and one at Alice Tully Hall before the age of 16.
At age 16, he moved to Virginia and played with The Ringling Bros/Barnum & Bailey Circus each time they came to Tidewater. He performed with the O’Jays, Temptations, Coasters, Drifters, Platters plus NOW and the Tidewater Jazz All-Stars, which opened for Doc Severinsen at the Town Point Jazz Festival. He then produced an original Sonata when he was just 19 years old and recorded it with Joel Futterman & Russell Scarborough (NOW) in 1979.
Then Jon played in London & Paris, got a music performance degree at VCU, was awarded the trumpet soloist of merit from Branford Marsalis and Conte Condoli at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival, performed for the National Jazz Educators Association, played three concerts with Dr. Frank Foster, recorded with dozens of artists and groups including the Blues Brothers and directed Vinnie Knight’s big band, the Jazz Riders.
Jon joined the Central Virginia Jazz Orchestra (CVJO), worked and recorded with Steve Bassett & his Mystic Soul Bubbas, played the 2008 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Festival with his Jazz Warriors (which opened for Paquito DeRivera, Ramsey Lewis & Fourplay). In 2010 he played with Gloria Gaynor and In 2011 with Martha Revees & the Vandellas. He performed at the Duck Jazz Festival in 2012 and the Richmond Jazz Festival in 2013.
The Chez Roue Orchette is a band with which he has played every Thursday night since 1995. There are twenty years worth of digital recordings from these weekly events. Live performance music videos can be viewed on YouTube plus Facebook and Vimeo.
Jonathan is a big band specialist with roots in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band which he went to hear at the Village Vanguard on Monday nights in NYC while performing with the David Lawrence Orchestra. Since moving to Virginia he has performed with the following big bands: The Continentals, The Intercontinentals, VCU’s Jazz Orchestra 1, Les Brown’s Band of Renown, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (under the direction of Buddy Morrow), The Chez Roue Orchette, The Central Virginia Jazz Orchestra, The Upper East Side Big Band and the RVA Big Band plus he directed Vinnie Knight’s Jazz Riders big band.
Jonathan has recorded extensively in NYC with Jimmy Knepper and Kenny Washington plus the Ray Charles Ryhthm Section before producing his own sessions with Russell Scarborough and Joel Futterman. He has recorded with Nino Rossano, Paul Renz, Joe Kennedy Jr., Clint Ray, Lil’ Ronnie & the Bluebeats, Billy Thompson, The Upper East Side Big Band plus the Central Virginia Jazz Orchestra and Emme St James & Her Jazz Gentlemen.
Jon currently works with The Chez Roue Orchette, Central Virginia Jazz Orchestra, Skip & Skylark, The Band of Steve’s, Adrian Duke, The Upper East Side Big Band, The Attraction Band, Emme St James & Her Jazz Gentlemen, Cavalier Orchestra, RVA Big Band plus his own Jazz Warriors.
